Interview with Pro Bridal Makeup Artist Rachel Safrit

November 25, 2024

There's something truly magical about the moment a bride steps into the spotlight, her beauty accentuated by the skilled hands of a professional makeup artist. As a wedding photographer, I can't help but be awestruck by how this collaboration transforms not just the bride, but also her entire bridal party.

The result? A complexion that is photo-ready, with a flawless matte finish and defined facial features that won't wash out in photographs.

We recently worked with NC professional makeup artist, Rachel Safrit. Her signature look is natural and soft glam. We asked her how a professional bridal makeup application is different from day to day makeup. For Rachel, bridal makeup is all about technique - strategic layering and setting everything in place with different powders to last all day/night and look good in photos.

When it comes to preparing for one of the most important days of your life, Rachel requires a trial session with her bridal packages. She would never recommend going into a wedding day without knowing what to expect. She has an in-depth consultation to walk through the makeup process in three steps - eyes, face and lips. The bride approves each step before going on to the next. Brides are asked to bring inspirational photos, but most ask for advice on what look is most complementary to their skin tone and facial features. Here's something else to think about - when bridesmaids are also treated to professional makeup, it creates a cohesive look. Each face shines with confidence, yet no one person's makeup stands out more than another's. Instead they harmonize beautifully in every frame.

Rachel says most brides want a natural look. She explains that there is a difference in "natural looking" versus "truly natural". A full face of makeup can still look minimal while keeping you matte with defined features. It requires expert blending that enhances, rather than masks. She adds that skin prep is very important. It helps the skin look more airbrushed and flawless in photos. Most of her brides start getting facials, or have a skincare plan in place for months leading up to the wedding. Think "prepare the canvas". Just as a painter primes their canvas, skincare preps your skin for makeup.

Your wedding day is one of the most monumental occasions in your life. Hiring a professional makeup artist can truly transform the experience into something magical. They understand how to work with different skin types, and tones using products that not only look stunning in person, but also photograph beautifully. Rachel has curated her makeup kit over the years. She knows what works, and what doesn't. She avoids "glowy" products that are shiny and not long lasting. And she considers the light. Artificial and indoor lighting are much different than outdoors. She prefers getting ready with both natural and artificial light. The best place to "glam" is in front of windows.

We agree. It's all about the light! Imagine your eyes being defined, yet soft, allowing your true self to shine through. Your lips perfectly kissed with color that complements your overall theme without overpowering your features. And let's not forget about the complexion - an airbrushed finish that is camera-ready is essential for reflecting light beautifully in photographs. The artistry involved in achieving this level of beauty is inspiring. It allows me to focus on capturing genuine emotions while knowing that everyone is looking their absolute best - a true gift for any wedding photographer.
